What are “Code Signing” Certificates?

These Certificates are used to sign Software (code executed on Windows Operating Systems and Java), so that Relying Parties are aware of its Publisher and can verify the integrity of the code.

What is it used for?

Enhance public trust for your software, which will be executed without Security Warnings. Secure the authenticity and integrity of your Software, such as the Identity of the Publisher. Sign:

  • Individual executable files (.exe)
  • Macros and scripts (.vbs)
  • Installation Files (.msi)
  • Libraries (.dll)
  • Other Portable Executables (.cab, .dll, .ocx, .xpi and .xap)
  • Windows Drivers
  • Java Code (.jar)

What are my options?

Choose one of the following:

Code Signing IV (Individual Validated)
Code Signing Certificate that includes information to identify a Natural Person as the Software Publisher
Code Signing OV (Organization Validated)
Code Signing Certificate that includes information to identify a Legal Entity as the Software Publisher
Code Signing EV (Extended Validated)
Code Signing Certificate that includes the information to identify a Legal Entity as the Software Publisher and the official Registry information for the Legal Entity

Important Notice: You will need an EV Code Signing Certificate for your software to gain instant reputation in Microsoft Windows platforms and to also participate in the Windows Hardware Compatibility program
